Leadership and its role in the mental health & wellbeing by Lewis Garrad & Neil Narale
The Covid-19 pandemic has accelerated focus on mental health and wellbeing. Many organizations and governments had already started to take mental health more seriously – but the impact of a global health crisis and the subsequent mitigation actions brought many wellbeing issues into the global leadership agenda, right away.
Mercer has spent several years working with organizations to design and implement their mental health and wellbeing strategies. One of the things we notice is that organizations have started to implement effective response strategies to mental health challenges (e.g. extending insurance cover, providing an employee assistance program, training managers to identify issues); However, leading organisations are being much more proactive – looking to enhance employee wellbeing as a way to maintain employee energy and drive more sustainable performance. Research clearly shows that the experience that employee have at/with work is a significant driver of their overall wellbeing. Some cultures generate a thriving experience, other drain energy and cause people to feel burnt out.
Leadership clearly plays a critical role in adapting to this challenge. During the session we’ll discuss how leaders can adapt support their people as organizations adapt to the new hybrid way of working.
In this session you’ll learn:
– Why now? Data & insights from COVID, restrictions, organization changes
– Systemic look at mental health & wellbeing support mechanisms
– The role of leaders
– Why is this becoming a critical agenda item at Board level?
– Implementation & measurement at work
